What Happens in a 30-Minute Headshot Session (and Why to Book Yours Before January)

Thirty minutes is shorter than most meetings and longer than most people would ever choose to spend being photographed. That’s the length of a headshot mini at Studio S Portraits in Needham Center. The question I hear most from people thinking about booking one isn’t about price or outfits. It’s some version of “can you really get a great headshot in half an hour?” You can, because by the time you walk into the studio, most of the work is already done.

Here’s how a headshot session actually runs, what you leave with, and why the weeks before the new year are the best time to do it.

What happens before a headshot session?

A few days before your session, we have a short call about what you do, who needs to trust you, and where your photo will be used. A headshot for a financial advisor meeting new clients has a different job from one for a founder raising money or a therapist opening a practice, and the call is where we figure out which one you need. I turn that conversation into a shot list for you specifically, so before you arrive I already know the look we’re after, whether that’s approachable, authoritative or somewhere in between, and which backgrounds and outfits will get us there. That planning is why thirty minutes is enough. We spend the session getting the right shots instead of guessing what to try.

Because hair and makeup are part of every session, booking needs a few days of notice so the artist can be scheduled. Last-minute requests the day before can’t be accommodated.

What happens during a 30-minute headshot session?

Your first stop is the hair and makeup chair. It’s less about glamour than about what the camera does: shine, flyaways and redness are exactly what a lens exaggerates and retouching can only partly fix, so it’s far better to deal with them before the first frame. If you’re coming in during a Boston winter, our [seasonal headshot tips for Boston weather] cover how to arrive without static, hat hair or a coat-creased shirt.

Hair and Makeup for a Headshot Session

In front of the camera, I usually start with the pose everyone already knows, arms crossed. It’s familiar, it gives nervous hands somewhere to go, and a well-made crossed-arms portrait is a classic for a reason. From there, the posing guidance gets specific: where to put your weight, how to angle your shoulders, and what to do with your chin and your hands. Some of it will feel strange. If it makes you laugh, good. A real laugh is worth more than any smile I could ask for.

Halfway through, you change into your second outfit and we work through the rest of the shot list with a different look. That gives you range: one image that reads polished and one that reads approachable, so your photos can do different jobs.

What do you get from a headshot mini?

Every Studio S headshot mini includes thirty minutes in the studio, two outfits, professional hair and makeup, posing guidance, and three high-resolution edited photos delivered within five days. Those three images cover far more than your LinkedIn profile: your website’s about page, your email signature, speaker bios and event programs, podcast guest pages, press features, company directories, and the “send us a photo” requests that always arrive at the worst possible moment.

Why book a headshot before January?

January is when a lot of first impressions happen without you in the room. New roles get announced, job searches restart, conference organizers ask for bios, and prospective clients with new budgets decide who to call. In almost every one of those moments, your headshot speaks before you do, and it speaks fast. In a well-known Princeton study, psychologists Janine Willis and Alexander Todorov found that people judge a stranger’s trustworthiness, competence and likeability from a face in about a tenth of a second, and more time mostly made them more confident in that first read rather than changing it. A headshot taken in November is already doing its job by the time January arrives.

The last Studio S headshot mini of 2026 is Friday, November 13th, at our studio in Needham Center. Photos are delivered within five days, so your new headshot is in your inbox before Thanksgiving. Minis pause for December and return in January. You can [book your headshot mini here].

Who is a headshot mini best for?

A headshot mini is best for professionals who need one strong, current photo, and need it soon. That includes anyone starting a job search in the new year, stepping into a new role or a promotion that’s about to be announced, launching a business or practice in the first quarter, or speaking and sitting on panels early in the year. It’s also for anyone whose current photo was taken a job title or two ago.

If you need a full library of images for a website, social media and a year of content, a personal branding session is the better fit. Our post on [headshot vs. personal branding sessions] explains how to tell which one you need.
